Cameron Harlock felt right at home in Rochester, NY during round one of the Monroe Invitational, even though he is 8,800 miles from his homeland of New Zealand.
His opening round 66 was mainly built on hole Nos. 9-13 when he made two birdies and back-to-back eagles. The only blemishes on his card came on the fifth and sixth holes where he made bogey.
It's a busy leaderboard at the top, as a total of 20 golfers are within four strokes of Harlock with 54 holes remaining at the Donald Ross-designed Monroe Golf Club.
Four players are just one shot behind Harlock at 3-under par. Canadian
Matthew Anderson has one win under his belt this year in the Glencoe Invitational. He also earned medalist honors in U.S. Amateur qualifying at Oshawa Golf and Curling Club. Anderson carded six birdies, including five birdies in his first 12 holes, but a double bogey on 14 and a bogey on 16 tripped him up.
John Broderick, a Vanderbilt commit from Wellesley, Mass. also shot 67 in round one. A 31 on the back nine was highlighted by an eagle on the 12th hole.
Among the eight players that shot 68 is local
Aiden Spampinato. Spampinato is a student at Methodist University in North Carolina who played in a qualifier to earn a spot in the Monroe for the second straight year.
Drew Doyle from Lexington, Ky and
Ryan Hart from Naples, Fla. round out the group at 3-under par. Both players were steady throughout their rounds, Doyle made five birdies and Hart tallied four.
