McDermott goes wire-to-wire to win Grapevine Amateur
2021 Grapevine Amateur champion Dylan McDermott
Dylan McDermott punctuated his wire-to-wire victory at the Grapevine Amateur by closing with a final round 71 to earn a one-shot win over
Davis McDowell and
Trey Davis on Silverado's North Course in Napa, Calif.
McDermott, who plays collegiately at the University of Colorado, managed rounds of 68-75-71 in soggy conditions to finish at 2-under 214 for the 54-hole event. He opened a three-stroke lead after the first round after making seven birdies against three bogeys for an opening-round 68 on Tuesday. Cold and wet conditions on Wednesday led to high scores, but a 3-over 75 was good enough for McDermott to maintain at the 36-hole mark.
With McDowell and Davis nipping at his heels, the Granite Bay, Calif. never relinquished his lead on Thursday, however, he watched nervously as McDowell's long eagle putt on the par-5 finishing hole narrowly missed its mark.
“I played well all week but struggled on the greens," said McDermott. "It felt good to pull off the win. The course played tough and I felt the main way to play well out there was to keep the ball in the fairway. With some tough pins, I just needed to keep the ball below the hole and give myself makeable putts.”
The Grapevine Amateur is the ninth event of the 2021-22 Troon Saguaro Amateur Series, which concludes with the 2022 Saguaro Amateur at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona, January 3-5.
