The busiest golf course in competitive amateur golf continues its legacy this week, hosting a field of 15 college teams for the second-straight year at the Maridoe Invitational.
During the peak of Covid-19's interruption of competitive golf in 2020, Maridoe and it's owner Albert Huddleston stepped up to provide a place to play, with back-to-back events that featured both top amateurs and Texas-based pros like Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler. This came after hosting several Texas Golf Association and Texas PGA tournaments in 2019 and the Trans-Miss Amateur in 2019.
But 2020 was the year that everyone learned Maridoe's name, as the course hosted The Southern Amateur -- like The Trans-Miss a staple of the summer amateur circuit. And despite most of college golf being canceled for the season, Maridoe brought a unique dual field formatted event to the table, with a PGA Tour exemption to the Houston Open given to
champion Kyle Hogan of Texas Tech.
And get this, that prize was a huge bonus for Hogan's first collegiate win.
The No. 1 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys, fresh off a win at the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach would have been the clear favorite if they were in the field. But they will next see action at the Olympia Fields/Fightin Illini Invitational later this week.
But there will be plenty of major programs represented when the event is televised for three-straight days Sept. 13-15, including No. 2 ranked Oklahoma and the No. 5 ranked Arizona Sun Devils. And never forget that when the Texas Longhorns are in the field in their home state, they will surely put up a fight, despite being ranked No. 11 in the early polls.
Check out the action on Golf Channel from 4pm to 6pm each day, Eastern Daylight Time.
