With the holiday season upon us, the grind has yet to stop for collegiate and amateur golfers across the country. The CTX Dogwood Challenge, hosted by the College Tour X, gave both men and women amateurs an opportunity to stuff their stockings with a win at the Lakewood Club in Point Clear, Alabama.
The weather was not kind on the edge of the Mobile Bay as temps lingered in the low-to-mid 40s with winds on Tuesday gusting near 25 miles per hour.
But Kansas State’s Ethan Miller was not fazed by the conditions. After opening with a 75, he posted an impressive 6-under 66 in round two, a tournament low despite the treacherous weather. Not only was his 66 the tournament low, but it was the low round of the day by seven shots.
Through 36 holes, Miller held a three-shot lead over Huntingdon College’s Carson Whitton and a five-shot lead Butler’s Micahel Cascino. While Whitton kept pace with an even-par round, Cascino made a big move with a final-round 68 to slide into second place ahead of Whitton.
The four-under round was not enough to make up the difference as Miller had a solid round, following up his tournament low with a 3-under 69. With just two bogeys over his final 36 holes, Miller clinched the championship by three with a 6-under 210.
On the women’s side, Florida Gulf Coast’s Sarah Edwards ran away with the championship, tallying a 4-over 220. Edwards battled through the tough conditions all week long to secure a nine shot win over Daytona State’s Madison Tenore. Auburn’s Ashley-Sinclair Curtis and Middle Tennessee State's Lauren Gilchrist shared third place.
The next stop on the College Tour X slate begins Thursday at RTJ Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove in Mobile, Alabama at the CTX Port City Championship.
