Zihao Jin (L) and Ken Kubis
Zihao Jin, a senior at San Diego State University, defeated Gabriel DeCasas of Ave Maria University in a playoff to win the Coronado City Amateur at Coronado (Calif.) Golf Course.
Jin opened the tournament with a 68 to share the lead with his SDSU teammate Youssef Guezzale, with DeCasas two shots back. As scores went up in the final round, Jin managed a 73 for a 3-under 141 total.
DeCasas shot a 71 to match Jin and force the playoff. On the third playoff hole, Jin emerged victorious.
Guezzale shot a 75 to finish third at 1-under 143, tied with another SDSU teammate Amadeo Figus. Michael Behr finished fifth with consecutive rounds of 72.
The defending champion Jack Townsend finished tied for ninth at two over par.
In the Senior division, Ken Kubis held on to win in a playoff over John Hoffman. Kubis fired a 68 in the first round to sprint to a 7-shot lead over Hoffman, but struggled to an 80 in the final round as Hoffman caught him with a 73. But Kubis prevailed on the second playoff hole.
It was the second straight year Hoffman fell in a playoff after winning the title in 2018. Tony Ralph was third, just one shot out of the playoff.
