Arizona claims back to back collegiate amateur wins
Trevor Werbylo (Arizona Athletics)

Last week, it was David Laskin. This week? Trevor Werbylo.

The Wildcat junior split a share of second place last week alongside San Jose State’s Parker Sisk who were both wight shots back of Laskin at the GCAA Am Series.

Once again, it was Werbylo battling a Wildcat teammate but this time coming out on top. Werbylo pulled away from Arizona sophomore Bradley Reeves with a final round 5-under 67 at the Troon Saguaro Amateur Series stop in Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club for the 2020 Tucker Amateur.

Werbylo began the tournament on Saturday with three straight birdies. He closed the championship out in the same fashion with consecutive birdies on Nos. 16, 17, and 18 to shoot a final round 67 and a tournament total of 15-under 201 to clear this teammate by a single stroke.

Both Werbylo and Reeves birdied Nos. 16 and 17 but Reeves was not able to answer the call again on the 18th. Down two shots to begin the day, Werbylo was able to overcome the deficit thanks to Reeves being unable to get anything going on the front nine. Carding a 37, Werbylo made up the shots with a 1-under 35 of his own.

Drilling home five birdies on his final seven holes, Werbylo gets bragging rights over his fellow Wildcat...at least for now.

Arizona, as well as the other 11 members of the Pac-12 will not be playing team golf this fall due to the conference shutting the season down due to COVID-19. The Wildcats look to be building plenty of momentum towards when they will finally get their chance to play as a team in the spring.
