Report courtesy the Southern California PGAThe Labor Day weekend was once again highlighted with the playing of the 28th Inland Empire Amateur Championship featuring a field of 168 competitors. The warm weather loomed all weekend, but didn't slow down the impressive play with a leaderboard stacked with low numbers.
The 54-hole event visited the top facilities in the region with the first round hosted at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, the second round at Goose Creek Golf Club in Mira Loma and the final round at Victoria Club in Riverside.
Greyson Leach of Rolling Hills Estates climbs back to win the Championship Flight in the IE Am Championship. Leach started the final round two shots back, but posted an impressive 8-under par 64 to chase down the leaders and win by one shot over second place finisher Chanachon Chokprajakchat of Anaheim. Leach posted rounds of 69 – 66 – 64 for a three day total of 199, 8-under par.
Mark Miller of West Covina carded rounds of 77 – 70 – 70 to win the Senior Flight by seven shots. After his first round of 5-over par in round one, there was no looking back as Miller found his rhythm over the final two rounds to distant himself from the field.
Special thank you to Mr. Ed Holmes for serving as a starter and his dedication to this Championship and to Mr. Jason Taylor, PGA for his continued support. Thank you to the Rules Committee and their countless hours – Lee Wortman and Bill Demint.
Finally, thanks to the host facilities and their entire staff for hosting this annual Labor Day event – Oak Valley GC, Ross Fisher, PGA of Goose Creek GC and Jeff Cross, PGA of Victoria Club.
