Tommy Morrison (Southern Golf Association)
The 48th Junior Southern Championship hosted by Blessings Golf Club in Johnson, Arkansas was the of Thomas ‘Tommy’ Morrison’s first win in quite a while.
The 6-foot-8 15-year-old phenom owned the course as the only competitor in the field to post all three rounds under par (67-69-68). Morrison, who had a three-shot lead heading into the final round, cruised to a four-shot victory on Friday.
“I was in the same situation last year, leading the first two rounds,” Morrison said. “It’s been a while since I won a tournament, so it feels really good to pull off a win.”
Morrison’s closest competitor was Duluth, Georgia’s Carter Loflin. Loflin was extraordinary most of the week, only having a slow start during the first round. With four bogeys to three birdies on Wednesday, Loflin tallied a 1-over 73, which could have been the difference maker to tie Morrison on Friday.
Quickly turning it around on Thursday, Loflin flirted with being on #59Watch through No. 8. Going 6-under through eight, Loflin stumbled with a double-bogey to close out the front nine for a 32. Regaining the two dropped shots with birdies on Nos. 10 and 11, Loflin cooled off going even the rest of the way.
In Friday’s final round the duo was paired together with Loflin needing to make up three shots.
Gaining a shot on the front nine, Loflin was unable to catch Morrison, posting a 69 to Morrison’s 68.
With the win, Morrison helped the state of Texas claim the State Team competition. Hudson Weibel, Dallas (143), Jaivir Pande, Houston (144), and Sebastian Moss, Pearland (144) were accompanied by Morrison’s 136 through the first 36 holes.
We’ll continue to see plenty of Morrison’s game over the next few seasons. The high school sophomore picked up two years of AJGA exemptions, an exemption into the 2021 Northeast Amateur, the 2021 Southern Amateur, and more with the victory.
