Silverado Amateur: Costas Panay wins at PGA Tour stop
Costas Panay (Troon Saguaro Amateur Series)
University of California-Berkley sophomore Costas Panay rallied to capture the Silverado Amateur at Silverado Resort’s North Course in Napa, California.
The resort plays host to the Safeway Open each year and is the opening leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs this year.
Panay, from Redmond, Washington, was 3-under through 36-holes, rallied with a closing 67 to best Southern Cal’s Cameron Henry (-7) and Holy Names’ David Na (-5) to post an 8-under, 208 total.
Starting the day three off the lead, Panay had an up and down front stretch, posting three birdies and two bogeys for a 1-under 35, making the turn at 4-under for the tournament.
Over the final nine holes, Panay found a rhythm as he went bogey-less to post a closing 32, including a birdie on 17 to put him one clear of Henry and the rest of the field.
"It feels amazing," Panay told Cal-Berkley. "To play golf at a high level, my teammates and I all have to put in an incredible amount of hard work, and it's really nice to see it pay off. It feels both humbling and energizing. My focus today was on my mental game. I have been working hard on it, and while I felt pressure, I was able to fight it off."
Redshirting the 2019-20 season, Panay will be a part of the Golden Bears’ team for the 2020-21 season.
Rounding out the top-5 was UCLA signee Ty Griggs (-5) and BYU's Brock Stanger (-5) who tied for third alongside Na.
