Oklahoma lost no ground to a star-studded Nike Collegiate field on Monday, building on its first-round lead with a second-round 17-under 267. The Sooners now have a 15-shot cushion on Wake Forest, which so far this season, is the top-ranked team in men’s college golf.
No other team got close to what the Sooners did in the second round. Oklahoma counters combined for 25 birdies at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course in North Plains, Ore. Seniors Garett Reband and Quade Cummins led the team with rounds of 5-under 66. Reband’s round has him tied for second at 9 under.
Reband trails teammate Logan McCallister in the individual race, who brought in a second-round 4-under 67 that got him to 10 under and gave him the individual lead.
Sophomore Patrick Welch added a 3-under 68. Oklahoma is now 31 under as a team.
The tournament features an elite field that includes six of the eight NCAA match play quarterfinalists from last season. Wake Forest, one of those six teams, climbed three spots up the leaderboard on Monday with an 11-under 273.
"It was a very nice day with solid play by all five players," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "Our goal is to continue to improve and this team continues to do that. I am proud of them."
Parker Gillam tied for the low round of the day in the 75-player field, shooting a 6-under 65, highlighted by a 5-under back nine. He moved up to T-7th on the individual leaderboard at 6-under.
Vanderbilt’s John Augenstein also had a second-round 65.
Clemson is third at 14 under and Oklahoma State is fourth at 10 under.
