WINDERMERE, Fla. (Oct. 23, 2018) – With an eight-shot lead at the start of the day, Vanderbilt refused to let up at Isleworth Country Club in pursuit of the Tavistock Collegiate title. In fact, the Commodores hit the gas so hard that they set a new tournament scoring record at 31-under par. No other team was inside 20 shots by the time the final round was complete.
This is Vanderbilt’s first title of the fall season, and the 20th under head coach Scott Limbaugh. The team’s final-round 13-under 275 made the coach downright poetic.
"We got a little better each time out this fall which was good to see," said Limbaugh. "This is a great way to end the fall and it's exciting to kind of play close to what we are capable of. I think we also know we have a lot of room to improve during the off season. We learned this fall that we are capable of being a really good team and also that we can be average if we aren't having fun and doing the little things the right way. I also think we have to find some more consistency through the lineup and need to see some younger guys taking ownership of their games. We are looking forward to getting some rest and when it's time to get better, knowing what we need to focus on to keep moving forward."
Will Gordon’s bogey-free, 6-under 66 in the final round got him to 16 under and resulted in a four-shot margin of victory in the individual race. Auburn’s Branden Mancheno was second and Gordon’s Vanderbilt teammates Patrick Martin (9 under) and John Augenstein (7 under) took the third and fourth spots on the leaderboard.
On Tuesday, Martin contributed the best round of the day, a 7-under 65 that included birdies on the final three holes. Augenstein had 74, his highest round of the week by five shots. Teammate Harrison Ott went the other way to contribute the crucial fourth score, a 2-under 70 that was his best of the week by five shots.
Arizona State and Auburn tied for second at 11 under. Texas Tech was fourth at 7 under and LSU rounded out the top 5 at 2 under.
