VERO BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 16, 2018) – The Quail Valley Collegiate came down to two Florida teams on Tuesday as North Florida and South Florida battled for the top spot. In the end, North Florida came out on top by a single stroke.
The Ospreys put up a final-round 13-under 275 at Quail Valley Golf Club to reach 30 under for 54 holes. That’s the second-lowest total in program history. North Florida led all teams in par-3 and par-4 scoring.
Travis Trace set the pace for North Florida, firing rounds of 70-67-66 to win the individual title at 13 under. He was three shots ahead of Blake Elliott of McNeese State. This is Trace’s second career individual title, and it came at a good time. Phillip Knowles, the Ospreys’ leading scorer, finished outside the top 10 for the first time this season. After opening with rounds of 69-67, Knowles fell to 76 in the final round. He tied for 12th with teammate Michael Mattiace.
"The guys really stepped up today,” head coach Scott Schroeder said. “With our best player struggling, we had a great team effort led by Travis getting his second career win today. It was fun to compete with USF down the stretch as both teams played a bunch of really good golf."
Behind South Florida, at 29 under, Arkansas State was 26 under and in third. Memphis was fourth at 4 under and Jacksonville was fifth at 2 under.
