A team representing the Middle Atlantic Golf Association, backed by a 4 1/2 – 1 1/2 lead from the opening Four-Ball pairings, jumped on a team from the Golf Association of Philadelphia, winning six of the first seven (of 12) singles matches to clinch what became a 12 1/2 – 5 1/2 triumph in the 67th Mason-Dixon Match at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va., Oct. 13-14.

The win enabled the Middle Atlantic to stop a two-year skid and narrow the series to 35-27-5.

Senior Matt Sughrue, from Trump National, and Junior Michael Brennan, from River Creek Club, provided the widest victory margin with 5-and-4 decisions for the MAGA. Sughrue birdied Nos. 7-8-9 to break away from Glenn Smeraglio, while Brennan, 16, who had added a Virginia High School crown earlier in the week to a MAGA Amateur title of the day before, was 3-up at the turn on Andrew Wallace, Green Valley CC, and birdied 12 and 13 to be dormie.

Warnquist, from Manor CC, was 1-2 down to Mark Farley, Lu Lu GC, for much of the round, but rallied on the back side for three birdies to get even, then won the 18th with a par. Rice, from Old South CC, won the 10th with one of his four birdies, and won the 11th with a par to go 3 up on Blane Lafferty, Little Mill CC. Rice held on for a 3-and-2 win

Dulik, a former Middle Atlantic Amateur champion and recent University of Louisville graduate who plays from Reston National CC, was in command against Vince Kwon, Little Mill CC, winning 3 and 2.

Baltimore CC clubmates Ryan McCarthy and Patrick McCormick halved their matches for a 1/2 point each. Against Matthew Finger, a former Maryland resident now playing out of DuPont CC, McCarthy was 2-down after 13, birdied 14 and 16 to get even, lost 17 to a birdie, then got a half when he chipped in for par from behind the last green. McCormick was 2 up through 16, but Michael Brown, from Lu Lu CC, the GAP Player of the Year, showed his mettle when he birdied 17-18 to get the draw.

Senior Oscar Mestre, from Overbrook CC, and Little Mill members Troy Vannucci amd Michael Hyland collected the victories for the visitors.

Mestre set the tone against Flemister (brothers in law) when he birdied the 10th and won the 11th with a par on his way to a 4-and-2 triumph. Vannucci (against Belle Haven member and former MAGA Amateur winner Frank Alafoginis) and Hyland (vs. Charlie Winegardner, Washington Met Amateur titleholder from Old South CC) both scored 3-and-2 wins.

The gray overcast contained some rain showers early in the day and the temperature was in the mid-50’s.
