POPLAR BLUFFS, Mo. (Sept. 18, 2018) – When you have a six-shot cushion to start the day, courtesy of an opening 9-under 63, there isn’t a lot of pressure to score. That was the scenario Wayne Fredrick was in at the start of the second round of the Missouri Senior Amateur on Tuesday.
Fredrick had an impressive five birdies and three eagles in his opening round at Westwood Hills Country Club. The next-lowest first-round score was 68. On Tuesday, Fredrick came back with a 1-under 72 that included three birdies and four bogeys. That left the Springfield, Mo., resident with the same six-shot margin with which he had started the day.
For Fredrick, this Senior Amateur title completes a long list of Missouri Golf Association accomplishments. He has now won the Missouri Amateur Championship, the Missouri Stroke Play Championship and Missouri Mid-Amateur Championship in addition to the Senior.
Three players finished six shots behind Fredrick at 2-under 140, including Robert Hanneken of Waynesville, Mo., Brian Haskell of St. Joseph, Mo., and Timothy Holmes of Springfield, Mo. There were four more players at even par, among them Steve Groom, who finished in the top 20 at last year’s British Senior Amateur.
The Super Senior title went to Denny Payne, a Creve Coeur, Mo., resident who had rounds of 72-75 to finish at 5-over 147. Jim Beatson of Camdenton, Mo., also finished on that number, but Payne won on the first playoff hole.
