CONYERS, Ga. (Sept. 9, 2018) – Edward Hollis surged in the final round of the Georgia Public Links Championship to tie and eventually overtake first-round leader Billy Mitchell. Hollis outlasted both the opposition and the weather on a day that was interrupted by storms.
Hollis opened with 74 at Cherokee Run Golf Club and was four off the first-round pace set by Billy Mitchell, a player who won this championship in 2010 and 2011. Hollis, however, played solid in Round 2. He had nothing but pars and two birdies through his first 17 holes. A bogey on No. 18 knocked him back into a tie for first with Mitchell. Both players stood at 1 over after Mitchell had a tough second-round 75 that included bogeys on his first two holes.
Ultimately, Hollis, of Loganville, Ga., sank a long birdie putt on the first hole of sudden death to take the title.
Tra Dykes and Frank Webster tied for third at 3 over. Sunday’s best round belonged to Justin Connelly, whose 2-under 70 dropped him to 4 over for the tournament and into a tie for fifth with Chris Waters and Robert Williams.
