SKY VALLEY, Ga. (Aug. 21, 2018) –
Laura Coble owns another Georgia Women’s Senior Amateur title after holding off
Brenda Pictor at Sky Valley Country Club. It’s become a familiar storyline at this event.
Coble and Pictor have been trading this championship back and forth for the better part of a decade. Pictor won five straight from 2009-2013 (she also won in 2007 and 2017) before Coble took over and won three straight from 2014-2016. They’re the dominant names in Peach State women’s senior golf.
“I didn’t know how I stood," Coble said of the end of the tournament. "I asked a couple people and nobody knew, so I was just playing, digging as hard as I could to get as many in before I got to the house so luckily it worked out."
Coble’s victory on Tuesday came on the strength of a final-round 2-under 70. It was her fourth time winning this event. Coble, of Augusta, Ga., made four birdies and sprinkled in two bogeys. It was a notable comeback from a first-round 77 that included too many bogeys.
“I had a little chat with myself and decided to have a different attitude and hopefully that would work,” Coble said of the change in mindset between the two rounds.
Pictor, meanwhile, had rounds of 72-80 to finish at 8 over and five shots behind Coble. Pictor’s final-round included a quadruple-bogey 8 on the second hole and a string of bogeys on the back nine.
Coble’s and Pictor’s success is not just confined to the state level. Coble was runner-up at the 2009 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, and just missed qualifying for this year’s Mid-Amateur. Pictor did qualify, and will play for the first time since 2014.
Cheryl Grigg of Sea Island, Ga., was third at 9 over followed by Susan Rheney of Greensboro, Ga., and Shelly White of Atlanta in a tie for fourth at 12 over.
Bobbie Suttler of Marietta, Ga., finished at 18 over (82-80) to win the super senior division by two shots over Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain, Ga.
