Past Champions Advance at San Francisco Senior

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (March 7, 2018) - The day after stroke play qualifying set the match play bracket of 32 players, the first set of matches in the San Francisco Senior City Championship were played at TPC Harding Park.

The stroke play medalist Greg O'Malley of Sonoma advanced with a hard-fought 1 up win over John Friend of Los Altos, who earlier proved himself to be a tough out by winning a 12-for-1 playoff to earn the final match play qualifying spot.

Winners of the last six San Francisco Senior City Championships are still alive and into the final 16. The defending champion Gary Vanier of Pleasant Hill, who also won in 2015, 2013, and 2009, advanced with a 3&2 win over Ken Helwig of San Jose. Vanier is the all-time leader in San Francisco city titles with 10, six in the regular division and four in the senior.

2016 champion Randy Haag of Orinda, who also won the regular City Championship in 1999, defeated Victor Campbell of Hercules 5&4. 2014 and 2012 champ Jim Williams of Orinda took out Steve Hendrick of Vallejo, 1 up.

Haag and Williams will face off in the round of 16.

Other winners on Wednesday include Corey West, Mike Benham, Bruce Hanavan, Dean Prince, Mel Collins Jr., Steve Donnelly, Scott Anderson, David Ujihara, James Camaione, Steve Hoyt, Bob Burnett and Ray Kong.

The match play round of 16 will be played this Saturday at TPC Harding Park.

Open to the first 84 entries received. Participants must have an index of 9.4 or lower as of the date of entry and must be 55 or older as of the first day of the tournament. Qualifying will consist of one 18- hole stroke play round (Tue Mar 18) after which the Senior Men's Championship Flight will consist of 32 match-play contestants.

In case of ties, a card-off (see SF City Golf Championship Playoff Procedures) will determine the players who will advance to match play. Players’ scores will determine seeding for match play. All rounds will be played at TPC Harding Park Golf Course.

Match play starts Wed Mar 19, with matches scheduled for Thu-Fri March 20-21 and the semis and finals on Sat- Sun Mar 22-23.

WITHDRAWALS AND REFUND POLICY
Players needing to withdraw should do so by filling out the form at sfgolfchampionship.com/contact/ . Players withdrawing before the entry deadline of February 18 will receive a refund of their entry fee minus $50. There will be no refunds after the entry deadline.
