GLENDORA, CA (February 27, 2018) - In continuing a common theme in SCGA Championships recently, Kathy Kurata of Friendly Hills CC found herself atop the leaderboard at the Senior Women’s Amateur Championship. This title is Kurata’s third in her last three SCGA events.
Kurata blistered the field with an opening round 2-over 75 on a tough Glendora Country Club setup. Her opening round was the best round of the day by an astonishing six strokes.
“I’ve been very fortunate,” said a humble Kurata. “I always just come out here to do my best. Yesterday, I had a very lucky round – I got the bounces and putts just rolled in. I was just happy to hold on in the end.”
After sleeping with a comfortable lead, Kurata came out and tried to hang on. She stumbled out of the gates and made the turn at 7-over with a front-nine 43. With the pack beginning to close, Kurata finished her round with two straight pars to seal the victory by one stroke over both Corey Weworski (Torrey Pines GC) and Sherry Wright (Olivas Links).
