MONTEGO BAY, ST. JAMES, JAMAICA (December 8, 2017) - American professional Hernan Borja shot a nine under par 63 to establish a new course record on yesterday's second day of the 51st Jamaica Open Golf Championship at Half Moon Golf Course in St James.
His sizzling round erased the 65 set by Ross Cochran in 2012.
Borja's day-two score of 134 or 10 under par sees him topping the leader board ahead of early leader Tarik Can, also of the USA. Can is on minus seven.
The top five spots on the leader board are occupied by golfers from the USA. They are Hernan Borja -10, Tarik Can -7, Michael Maguire -5, Brad Adamonis -4 and Jordan Gumberg -4.
Can was satisfied with his second day performance.
"It was good, I started with a birdie and I ended strong. The last four or five holes weren't into the wind so I played conservative and I managed to get five under, so it was great. I putted well, I did everything great."
The top four pros will tee off today at 9:20 a.m.
The top spot on the amateur leader board is held by national champion Sean Morris ahead of compatriot Justin Burrowes and Nikita Gubenko of the USA. Morris shot a two over par 74 for a total score of 148. Burrowes also shot two over par to add to Thursday's 75 for a total score of 149 while Gubenko would have been disappointed with his final score of 151.
Morris had a good start with a birdie on hole number one. He said after yesterday's round that it has been challenging but he expects to hold his own today.
"I do really want to win this championship, so I will be looking back at my round today and of course the first round on Thursday and see where I came up short and try to make good on the final day," he said.
The top four amateur golfers will tee off at 8 a.m. They are Sean Morris, LaForce Jean, Guy Borros and James Maw.
