SANTA ROSA, CA (October 29, 2017) - 32-year-old Kyle Hopkins of Santa Rosa won the Santa Rosa City by six shots on Sunday, with Luis Diaz a distant second. Hopkins shot 68-69 for a two-round total of 137.
Ruiz shot a 67 in round one to take a one-shot lead, but faded to a 76 in the final round.
Ruiz in turn was another six shots ahead of the third-place finisher Graham Beard, who was the only other player to break 150.
In the Senior division, George Fahey won on the fourth playoff hole over Ken Gosselin after both players shot two-round totals of 150. Matt Vukicevich missed the playoff by one shot and settled for third place.
Along with Oakmont Golf Club, Bennett Valley Golf Shop, Inc. donated a portion of the proceeds from the tournament to the North Bay Fire Relief Fund to help those affected by the recent wildfires in the Santa Rosa area.
It is remarkable that the course was able to host the tournament at all, given how close the fires came.
From Jess Stimack, golf professional at Bennett Valley: "The field was probably smaller due to the fires. The fire got within a quarter mile of the golf course; directly above the first fairway is where CAL FIRE performed a successful, and extremely visible backfire that saved all of Bennett Valley.
Both Bennett Valley and Oakmont lowered the greens fees for the event to increase the purse for the players, and also donated nearly $1000 to North Bay Fire Relief Fund."
