DECATUR, AL (September 24, 2017) - Stewart Whitt of Athens, GA shot a final-round 4-under 67 to win the 29th Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship at Burningtree Country Club.
Whitt started the day with a one-shot lead at one over par, and put together nine straight pars on the front nine. But when Matthew Gourgeot of Decatur birdied the par-four 9th, he got within one shot of Whitt's lead.
Whitt would step on the gas on the back nine, riding three birdies and an eagle on the par-five 16th, to pull away from the field. The key hole was the par-five 13th, where a Whitt birdie and a Gourgeot bogey moved the lead from one to three, and Whitt's eagle sealed the deal.
The winning total was three-under 210, the only under-par score of anyone in the field. Gourgeot closed with a 68 to finish alone in second at one-over 214. Woodie Eubanks of Oneonta shot a 69 to get into third place at 215.
The defending champion Clay Guerin of Hoover posted a final-round 70 to finish tied for fifth at five-over 218.
