Saunders Holds on to Win LA County Amateur
LOS ANGELES, California (August 28, 2017) —
Jonathan Saunders held his overnight lead, playing brilliantly on Sunday at Lakewood Country Club to win the Los Angeles County Amateur Championship.
The Long Beach golfer would open the event on Saturday with a 5-under 66 at Los Verdes Golf Course. Coming into Sunday’s final round two ahead of the pack, Saunders’ final round 69 at Lakewood was enough to keep his advantage winning with a two day total of 8-under-par (66-69=135).
Saunders' win yesterday adds to the already impressive summer he has had playing in Southern California, having won the Long Beach Match Play and finishing in 9th place at the Costa Mesa City Championship.
Creighton University’s Josh McCollum did his best to catch Saunders on Sunday, firing a 5-under-par 67, the lowest score posted at Lakewood CC. Having shot only 1-under on Saturday, however, McCollum’s strong finish would leave him with a 36-hole total of 137, two back of Saunders.
Dylan Hall (Colorado Springs, CO) of Cypress College finished alone in third at 138. His two college teammates, incoming freshman Luca Simpson of France and Andrew Thomson of Scotland, tied for fourth with identical scores of 68-72=140.
