Matt Gourgeot, the 2017 Alabama State Match Play champion

MONTGOMERY, AL (August 6, 2017) - Matt Gourgeot of Decatur, defeated Robby Prater of Birmingham 2 and 1 in the Final match to win the 17th Alabama State Match Play Championship.
Gourgeot was 3 up with three to play before Prater birdied 16 and hit his tee shot on the par-3 17th to within inches. Gourgeot then made a 25–foot putt birdie putt to win the title.
Gourgeot defeated Wesley Hunter 4 and 3 in the semifinals earlier in the day, while Prater beat Connor Reid 6 and 5 in his morning match.
ROUND OF 16 AND QUARTERFINALS
Number 9 seed Robby Prater of Birmingham will play number 13 seed Connor Reid of Opelika at 7:30am and number 15 seed Matt Gourgeot of Decatur will square off against number 11 seed Wesley Hunter of Mobile at 7:45am. The winners will play the Final Match in the afternoon.
Prater advanced to the semifinals by defeating Jason Smith of Hoover in 19 holes in the Round of 16 and Vic Kyatt of Birmingham 3&2 in the Quarterfinals.
Reid earned his spot in tomorrow’s match by defeating Clay Guerin of Hoover 5&3 in the Round of 16 and defending champion Bo Hayes of Southside 5&4 in the Quarterfinals.
Gourgeot defeated current State Amateur Champion Taylor Eyster of Birmingham 1 up in the Round of 16 and John Hayden of Birmingham 2&1 in the Quarterfinals.
Hunter beat number 6 seed Robbie Cotten of Brewton 2up in the Round of 16 and Scott Cornette of Montgomery 1up in the Quarterfinals.
STROKE PLAY QUALIFYING
Jeff Taylor of Montgomery and member of Wynlakes Golf & Country Club, Taylor Eyster of Birmingham, Calum Masters of Headland, and Clay Guerin of Hoover all tied for medalist honors after 36 holes of stroke play at Wynlakes Golf & Country Club.
Bo Hayes of Southside, looks to defend his title after shooting a second round 70 (-2), and a two round total 139 (-5) to claim the 5th seed for Match Play.
16 players finished under par and will advance to match play beginning Saturday, August 5, 2017.
