OMAHA, NE (June 30, 2017) - With a 37 hole triumph Jay Cottam defeated former Nebraska golfer Justin Jennings to win the 50th Nebraska Match Play Championship hosted by Shadow Ridge Country Club.
The match was the first extra hole championship match since 1980 when Tom Olson outlasted Mike Hughett in 39 holes.
On the first extra hole Cottam, a junior for the Nebraska Kearney Lopers, knocked his stiff on No. 1 and was conceded birdie to win in 37 holes.
Runner-up Justin Jennings took an early 2 up lead with wins on Nos. 3 and 4 and still led by that same margin following the 25th hole.
Looking to make a move late in the match, Cottam moved within 1 down with a victory on the 26th hole and then pulled even on No. 30 before taking his first lead of the match on the ensuing hole.
Cottam pushed his lead to 2 up on the 33rd and seemed to be in control until Jennings won the final two holes of regulation to force extra holes.
In the semifinals Cottam bested Brian Csipkes 3&2 while Jennings cruised 7&5 over 31-seed Travis Minzel.
