SOUTHAMPTON, NY (June 18, 2017) - Clancy Waugh took a big step forward this weekend at the C.B. MacDonald Annual Invitational hosted by the National Golf Links of America.
A standout as a freshman at Wake Forest, Waugh became just the 11th player in program history to win as a freshman. However, after redshirting as a junior he played in just five rounds as a senior this past year so he came into this weekend hoping to create some positive energy.
Well Waugh did more than that, breaking through and winning the C.B. MacDonald Annual Invitational, formally The Singles at National Golf Links, thanks to a hard fought 1 up victory against No. 4 Bill Hyder.
Playing as the second-seed Waugh defeated 15-seed Brian Williams 2&1 in the Round of 16, defending champion Sam Bernstein 5&4 in the quarterfinals and six-seed West Streib 4&3 in the semifinals.
Hyder advanced to the finals with a 1 up win over nine-seed Jamie Miller in the semifinals, he escaped the quarterfinals with a his first 1 up win of the tournament against No. 12 Brad Wilder while in the Round of 16 he bested No. 13 Graham Head 5&4.
Top-seed Andrew Chambers reached the quarterfinals before bowing out against Miller 2&1.
Even though a champion has been crowned there is still a bit to be determined. Chambers and Waugh finished stroke play qualifying tied for the low round of the day and they will now face off in a sudden death playoff sometime in the next week to determine a medalist.
