LUBBOCK, TX (May 8, 2017) - After day one of the Lubbock Regional hosted by The Rawls Course the lead belongs to 5-over Arizona State. On a day where the temperatures were in the mid-70's with winds blowing at times over 20 MPH scoring proved to be difficult on Monday with just six players breaking par.
One of those players to break par was the low Sun Devil, Monica Vaughn who at 1-under is tied for fourth. Vaughn played a flawless front nine with birdies on Nos. 3 and 7 to turn in 2-under 34 before birdieing the last to overcome two back nine bogeys and ensure a red figure round.
Arizona State was led to the top by three other top-20 performances on day one by Linnea Strom, Olivia Mehaffey and Sophia Zeeb all of whom are tied for 16th at 2-over.
Out in front of the individual race is UCLA's Lilia Vu following a 4-under 68. During the round Vu birdied seven-times and bogeyed three-times with her circles coming on Nos. 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 14 and 18.
Vu will carry a one-stoke lead into the second round over Cathleen Santoso (Oregon) at 3-under, Pimnipa Panthong (Kent State) at 2-under while Sophia Schubert (Texas), Alex White (BYU) and Vaughn are sharing fourth at place at 1-under.
From each regional six teams will advance to the NCAA Championships.
Outside of Arizona State the teams currently in position to advance are Oregon (+6) in second place, Texas Tech (+8) and UCLA (+8) are tied for third, BYU (+9) is fifth while San Diego State (+10) sits in fifth.
