CAPE TOWN, South Africa (April 28, 2017) - A long week at Westlake Golf Club will come to a close on Saturday. After 54-holes of stroke play qualifying and then four more rounds of match play the Western Province Amateur has finally reached the championship match and the tilt will feature Luca Filippi and Kyle McClatchie.
Filippi punched his ticket into the title match with a 2&1 win in the semifinals over Malcolm Mitchell. The runner-up at the 2016 Africa Junior Open, had to battle throughout his semifinal match and it wasn't until Filippi eagled the par-5 13th hole that he took the lead for good. Both players halved the next two holes before Filippi won the match with a par on the par-3 17th hole.
Filippi reached the semifinals with a 3&2 win in the quarterfinals during Friday morning play.
For McClatchie has march to the title match was capped by a 2 up victory over Marco Steyn. Down two after just three holes, McClatchie squared the match on the 6th and then after the lead traded hands for a stretch he took the lead for good with a birdie on the 13th hole. McClatchie then won the next hole with a birdie as well to extend his lead to 2 up. However, Steyn wouldn't go quietly winning the 17th hole to stay alive only to watch as McClatchie sealed the deal with an 18th hole birdie. The closing hole birdie was the fifth in the final six holes for McClatchie.
McClatchie, the winner of the 2017 North West Amateur Open, defeated Clayton Mansfield 4&3 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semis.
