PHOENIX, AZ (April 23, 2017) - Jake Chanen certainly knows how to close.
Leading by one at the start of the Arizona Stroke Play final round Chanen birdied his first three holes and then never looked back as he won the title by three shots over Grant Cesarek.
Chanen, a freshman for Grand Canyon University, made himself feel right at home while making his way around the Grand Canyon University Golf Course. The birdies on the first three holes simply set the stage for his closing bogey-free 65 that propelled him to a 12-under finish.
Following his opening birdies and a run of pars, Chanen rolled in his additional birds on Nos. 11, 14 and for good measure the 18th.
Runner-up Grant Cesarek charged hard with the round of the tournament, a 7-under 64, but at 9-under he fell short of catching Chanen.
Cesarek bogeyed once during his final round and he finished with an impressive four birdies in the last six holes.
Ben Harden, Travis Milleman, Hayden Webb and Sean O'Donnell all shared third at 5-under.
Defending champion Mason Anderson recorded a tied for 10th, 1-under finish.
54-HOLE RECAP
The 54-hole lead of the Arizona Stroke Play belongs to Jake Chanen but it is a slim one. Chanen, 6-under, holds a one-stroke advantage over a handful of players with the final round at Grand Canyon University Golf Course set for Sunday.
So far Chanen, a freshman at Grand Canyon, has combined rounds of 68-70-69 and on Saturday he birdied four-times while bogeying twice. His birdies fell on Nos. 4, 10, 12 and 13.
Brock Goyen is second at 5-under and one shot in front of three players sharing second at 4-under. The group includes Sean O'Donnell, Davis Evans and Hayden Webb.
Defending champion Mason Anderson is 1-under and tied for 13th.
