Semifinals set at Georgia Senior Match Play

COLUMBUS, GA (April 13, 2017) - With perfect playing conditions throughout the day, players delivered many exciting matches and the semifinal matchups are now set. The sixth edition of this event is taking place at Green Island Country Club, April 11-14.

Wright Waddell of Columbus, the one seed in the Senior division, will compete against Alan Thielemann of Woodstock in the first semifinal match. Waddell earned wins over Mark Benefield of Peachtree Corners (6 and 5) in the round of 16, and Frank Remmes of Lilburn (2 and 1) in the quarterfinals. Thielemann needed extra holes to outlast Lee Dennis of Comer (23 holes) in the round of 16, and Bob Royak of Alpharetta (5 and 4) in the quarterfinals.

The second semifinal match will feature Mark Nickerson of Roswell and Jack Kearney of Peachtree City. Nickerson made his way through the bracket with victories over Allen Peake of Macon (1 up) in the round of 16, and Donny Phillips Jr. of Suwanee (3 and 2) in the quarterfinals. Kearney earned his wins over Stephen Cazalet of Marietta (2 and 1) in the round of 16, and defending champion, Jeff Belk of Marietta, (3 and 1) in the quarterfinals.

In the Super Senior Division, the first semifinal match will feature Joe Whisenant of Roopville and Bill Evans of Columbus. Whisenant defeated defending champion Len McWilliams of Ellerslie (1 up) in the round of 16, and upset the one seed Frank Costanzo of Savannah (4 and 3) in the quarterfinals. Evans has wins over Mitsuji Ogawa of Columbus (2 and 1) in the round of 16, and Dan Rhoads of Flowery Branch (2 and 1) in the quarterfinals.

The last semifinal match includes Ernie Venet of Moultrie and David Nell of Sharpsburg. Venet was the number two seed and has victories over Nick Kirkland of Snellville (1 up) in the round of 16, and Ron Hunter of Jasper (1 up) in the quarterfinals. Nell advanced win big wins over Kenneth Coolik of Columbus (3 and 2) in the round of 16, and Brian Johnston of Peachtree Corners (3 and 2).

ABOUT THE Georgia Senior Match Play

Open to male amateur golfers age 55 or older for the Senior Division and age 65 or older for the Super Senior Division as of the first day of the competition.

Field: 120 players with the lowest USGA Handicap Indexes

Format: Match play preceded by 36 holes of stroke play qualifying; low 16 players advance to match play in both divisions if there are at least 32 entries in that division; otherwise, eight players.
