AWENDEW, SC (March 28, 2017) -- On Tuesday at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate South Carolina defended their title and picked up their first victory of the season. Tied for the lead at the start of the day with Ole Miss the Gamecocks closed with a 9-under final round at Bulls Bay Golf Club to finish 20-under and four-strokes in front of the Rebels.
Once again South Carolina was led by Keenan Huskey who with rounds of 66-73-67 finished 10-under and in third place. Huskey, last years individual champion, started the round four back in the medalist chase and made an early charge with five birdies in his first 11 holes to reach 11-under. However, a run of pars and his lone bogey of the day on the 17th prevented a further move up the leaderboard.
For South Carolina two other players finished inside the top-20 of the standings; Jamie Wilson (T5; -7) and Scott Stevens (T17; -1).
In the individual race the title went to Ole Miss' Ben Wolcott as he outlasted his teammate Braden Thornberry by a shot.
Wolcott and Thornberry began the day tied for the lead at 9-under but Wolcott was one-stroke better firing a 3-under 69 to post 12-under.
During the final round, Wolcott who recently medaled at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic, did most of his work early with 4th, 5th, 9th and 10th hole birdies. He did drop a shot on the way home but it didn't prove costly.
Thornberry, 11-under, ended up finishing second after he nearly overcame a two bogey in three hole start. With four birdies between Nos. 4-13 he would get as low as 12-under but the 2017 Jones Cup winner was ultimately done in by a 14th hole bogey.
As a team Ole Miss was second at 16-under, No. 20 Auburn and NC State shared third at 10-under while first round leader Georgia State placed fifth at 5-under.
