AWENDEW, SC (March 26, 2017) -- With red figures the story of the day, Georgia State has taken the first day Hootie at Bulls Bay lead. The Panthers received four under-par rounds at Bulls Bay Golf Club to reach 11-under and they will lead by two shots when the second round begins on Monday.
The round of the day for Georgia Southern, who hasn't placed better than fifth this year, came from Nathan Mallonee and his 5-under-67. The senior started on the 10th hole and began his day with a birdie, only to give it back with a bogey one hole later.
Two holes later Mallonee, tied for third overall, reached red figures for good with an eagle on the par-5 13th and despite two other bogeys the birdies were flying much of the day. 1-under after 13 holes, Mallonee poured in four birdies from Nos. 4-7 and then following an 8th hole bogey he closed with a birdie on the 9th.
For Georgia Southern the low Sunday rounds also came from Nathan Williams (T7; -3), Alexander Herrmann (T12; -2) and Maximilian Herrmann (T21; -1).
Out in front in the medalist race is defending individual champion Keenan Huskey of South Carolina and Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss. Both players fired 6-under 66's to take a one shot lead with two rounds remaining.
Huskey, who shared medalist honors this year at the Camden Collegiate Invitational, played a nearly flawless round of golf with seven birdies and one bogey. The birdies came on the 4th, 6th, 9th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 18th holes.
For Thornberry, a three-time winner this year, it was bogey-free round of golf. Thornberry birdied three-times on each side rolling in birds on Nos. 2, 6, 9, 10, 12 and 16.
Behind the lead duo in the medalist standings are Mallonee, Jimmy Stanger (Virginia), Ben Wolcott (Ole Miss) and Benjamin Shipp (NC State) at 5-under in third. Another five players are sharing seventh at 3-under.
Overall 34 players were 1-under or better on Sunday and are within five shots of the lead.
In the team standings behind Georgia Southern are defending champions South Carolina (-9) in second, No. 2 Virginia (-7) in third, Ole Miss (-5) in fourth and No. 20 Auburn (-4) in fifth.
