BATON ROUGE, LA (March 24, 2017) -- With inclement weather on tap for Saturday the teams at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic played a 36-hole first day and it is a Duke team looking for their first win of the season that holds a big lead. The Blue Devils at 5-under, will carry a 13-stroke lead into the final round at The University Club, a closing round that won't be played until Sunday due to the impending forecast.
Leona Maguire, the top-ranked amateur in the world, is pacing Duke thus far and following rounds of 67-68 she is 9-under and the individual leader by five-strokes.
Maguire bogeyed her first hole of the day but from then on she only dropped one other shot while birdieing nine-times and eagling once.
On Sunday Maguire, who won the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, will be making a bid for her second victory of the season.
Duke was helped to the lead by Virginia Elena Carta (T2; -4) and Gurbani Singh (T13; +3).
In the individual standings along with Elena Carta in second place is Julianne Alvarez (Washington), Cara Gorlei (Arkansas) is fourth at 2-under while Sarah Bae (NC State) is in fifth at 1-under.
Behind Duke in the team standings, it is Oklahoma State (+8); Arkansas (+8) in a tie for second, North Carolina State (+12) is in fourth and SMU (+19); Denver (+19) tied for fifth.
Hole-In-One Alert: Ariadna Fonseca of Kansas recorded an ace on the 159 yard par-3 13th.
