BANDON, OR (March 14, 2017) -- Well the competition at the Bandon Dunes Championship didn't pose much of a problem for the 10th ranked Oregon Ducks. Playing against a field that included two other top-12 teams the defending national champions closed with a 12-under day to tally a 54-hole 28-under total that saw them win by 21 shots.
Tuesday's victory was their third win of the season and second straight after they won the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate last month.
When the dust had settled at the Pacific Dunes course Oregon had placed three players inside the top-five, while nobody in the lineup finished worse than tied for 20th.
The low Ducks this week were Wyndham Clark and Edwin Yi, both of whom finished 8-under in a tie for second. Ryan Gronlund was one shot further back at 7-under and in fourth, Kevin Geniza ended up in a tie for 14th at 1-under and Norman Xiong rounded out the Oregon contingent by tying for 20th following a 2-over showing.
Oregon was so sharp in the final round that three players --Clark, Yi and Geniza-- all fired 4-under 68's.
Medalist honors went to Hannes Ronneblad of Texas Tech. Ronneblad used rounds of 65-71-70 to post his winning number of 10-under. The winner by two-strokes over Clark and Yi, Ronneblad used a late rally to capture the title.
From Sweden, Ronneblad was 2-over through 11 holes before surging to the title with 12th, 13th, 16th and 18th hole birdies.
Oregon's Gronlund was of course fourth ahead of fifth place Cameron Champ of Texas A&M who was 6-under.
Thanks to the play from Ronneblad No. 11 Texas Tech placed second at 7-under, Oregon State was 6-under in third, 4-under Colorado was the final team under-par in fourth while No. 12 Texas A&M was fifth.
36-Hole Recap
No. 10 Oregon continued their fine play on Monday and after 36-holes they are 16-under and leading the Bandon Dunes Championship by 10-strokes. On Tuesday the Ducks will be shooting for their third win of the season and second straight after they won the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in February.
Playing at Pacific Dunes, Oregon is being paced thus far by Ryan Gronlund who at 7-under is in second place following rounds of 65-71. Gronlund will begin the final round one shot behind medalist leader Hannes Ronneblad of Texas Tech.
Oregon has also received a lift through the first two rounds from Wyndham Clark and Edwin Yi, both whom are tied for sixth at 4-under.
Hannes Ronneblad worked his way to the top of the individual leaderboard with days of 65-71 to reach 8-under. Ronneblad started the day on fire with four straight birdies from Nos. 3-6 but still needed a final hole birdie to salvage a subpar round.
Behind Gronlund the individual top-five is rounded out by Kevin Velo of San Jose State at 6-under while Cameron Champ of Texas A&M and Jeremy Paul of Colorado are both 5-under and tied for fourth.
The team standing front runners include No. 11 Texas Tech in second place at 6-under, Oregon State is in third at 2-under while No. 12 Texas A&M and Colorado are sharing fourth at 1-under.
