ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA (March 7, 2017) -- Doug Hanzel held his position and as a result extended his Jones Cup Senior Invitational lead.
Hanzel turned in an even-par 70 in the second round at the Seaside Course of the Sea Island Golf Club and by remaining at 3-under he doubled his advantage to two-strokes.
Overall it was a steady day for Hanzel as he carded two birdies and two bogeys. The second of Hanzel's birdies came on the final hole.
In recent years Hanzel has become a perennial contender at the Jones Cup Senior. In addition to his 2014 victory, Hanzel is coming off a tied for third finish last year and a runner-up showing in 2015.
A victory on Sunday would be Hanzel's second AmateurGolf.com Senior Ranking event win of the season, after he previously captured January's Golfweek Senior National Championship.
Herb Fisher at 1-under is the only other player under-par and he will begin Wednesday's final round in second place. Fisher has posted rounds of 69-70 thus far and he would have been tied for the lead had he not bogeyed two of the final three holes.
Walter Tood and Vance Antoniou are tied for third and just three back at even-par while Jeff Belk and Jonathan Valuck are 1-over in a tie for fifth.
The round of the day went to Gene Elliot who fired a 3-under 67. Elliot, 2-over and in a share of seventh, turned in one of two red figure Tuesday rounds. Emile Vaughan's 1-under 69 was the only other under-par round of the day.
Defending champion Mark Weston is in 15th place and he will begin the final round at 5-over.
SUPER SENIOR DIVISION
In the Super Senior Division George Washburn has moved into the lead. Washburn, with rounds of 71-69 is 1-under and the leader by two shots over first round leader Don Marsh.
Despite a 3rd hole double-bogey, Washburn was able to recover and surge to the front with 6th, 8th and 17th hole birdies.
At 1-over Marsh is in second place, Taylor Adams is at 2-over in third, Larry Woods sits in fourth at 3-over while Frank Costanzo, Phil Pavoni and John Armstrong are sharing fifth at 5-over.
ROUND ONE RECAP
