HURRICANE, UT (February 4, 2017) -- In a two horse race Utah redshirt sophomore Kyler Dunkle defeated Dan Horner to capture the Sand Hollow Amateur at Sand Hollow Resort.
Dunkle, a transfer from Colorado State, began the day two-strokes off the pace but was able to pull even with first round leader Dan Horner at 6-under thanks to a final round 4-under 68.
The final day run for Dunkle began with the first of his six birdies on the 2nd hole. Throughout the round Dunkle bogeyed just twice but his second one, a final hole bogey, proved to be the difference between winning in regulation and extra holes.
In his first season with Utah, Dunkle has played in five events and twice finished inside the top-10.
Horner reached 6-under with a 2-under 70 on Saturday and he had a chance to win the tournament in regulation but he parred his final six holes.
Rhett Rassmussen was third at 3-under while JT Timmons and Nathan Wunderli shared fourth at 2-under.
ROUND ONE RECAP
With two birdies in his last three holes Dan Horner reached 4-under and the top of the Sandy Hollow Amateur leaderboard. When the final round begins Saturday at Sand Hollow Resort, Horner will be the owner of a one-stroke lead over Nathan Wunderli.
The late birdies for Horner came on the 16th and 17th holes as they helped Horner rebound from his lone bogey of the day on No. 15. Horner also rolled in birdies on the 2nd, 7th and 13th holes.
Since 2007 Horner has made it to the match play portion of the U.S. Mid-Amateur on four occasions. His most recent trip came in 2012.
Wunderli reached 3-under and second place with a four birdie, one bogey round. Starting on No. 2, Wunderli bogeyed his first hole before recovering nicely the rest of the way with 6th, 9th, 11th and 17th hole birdies.
