Wingate Park Country Club
WINGATE PARK, South Africa (January 28, 2017) -- Keegan Mclachlan and Malcolm Mitchell both sit at 8-under and they will carry a one-stroke lead into the final day of the Gauteng North Open.
Playing at Wingate Park Country Club, Mclachlan followed up a first round 3-under 69 with a 5-under 67 that pushed him up the leaderboard. Following a birdie on No. 4, Mclachlan bogeyed his only hole on the ensuing one before birdieing five holes the rest of the way.
Mitchell, the 2016 Ekurhuleni Open Stroke Play winner, raced up the leaderboard with a 5-under 67 of his own that included five birdies, two bogeys and an eagle on the par-5 18th.
Aubrey Beckley was 5-under for the day himself as he reached 7-under and third place. Beckley highlighted his round with an eagle on the par-5 15th.
Garrick Higgo, David Mcintyre and Burt Gildenhuys share third at 5-under and they will start the last day three behind.
First round leader Erhard Lambrechts dropped into a tie for 13th at 1-under.
ROUND ONE RECAP
Record a hole-in-one and lead after the first round, not a bad day for Erhard Lambrechts on day one of the Gauteng North Open being played at Wingate Park Country Club.
The ace came on the par-3 16th hole and it helped him to a 4-under first round that put him in the lead by one-stroke over a group of six players tied for second at 3-under. Lambrechts also carded six birdies on the day and four bogeys.
Overall 22 players broke par on the first day and 33 are within four-strokes of the lead with 36-holes remaining.
