Champions San Diego State (GoAztecs photo)
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (September 23, 2016) - San Diego State had good memories coming into the University of New Mexico Championship Course. It was the site of last year's NCAA Regionals where Gunn Yang holed out for double eagle to help defeat Texas A&M in a playoff, securing the final Nationals spot. The memories continue to be good ones as the Aztecs captured the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Saturday with a 54-hole total of 1-under 863.
The Aztecs shot a 2-over 290 on Saturday's final round to defeat runner-up Colorado State (+9) by 10 shots. Aztec junior Blake Abercrombie shot a final round 69 (3-under) which was one of the few rounds in the 60's in Saturday's difficult playing conditions. Abercrombie finished in a tie for 3rd individually while three other Aztecs finished inside the top 15 including PJ Samiere (2nd), Gunn Yang (12th), and Nahum Mendoza III (13th).
"Our guys played solid all week and stayed extremely patient when adversity struck," San Diego State head coach Ryan Donovan told Aztecs Athletics, "We had a good game plan and recalled some great memories, which really helped boost our confidence."
The Individual winner was Colorado State's Blake Cannon who fired rounds of 71, 69, and 70 for a three round total of 210 (6-under). This is Cannon's 2nd consecutive individual win, having won the Ram Masters Invitational last week. He joins the likes of Tiger Woods, Johnny Miller, Bobby Clampett, Duffy Waldorf, Tim Herron and Bruce Lietzke as champions of the historic fall season event.
