Chris Waters posts 65 for five-stroke lead at Georgia Public Links Championship

ACWORTH, GA (September 10, 2016) -- Chris Waters of Atlanta leads the Georgia Public Links Championship after firing a 6-under-par 65 in round one. The 28th edition of this competition is taking place at Cobblestone Golf Course, September 10-11.

Waters recorded a bogey-free round of six birdies on Saturday to take a five-stroke lead into the final round. He's looking for his second title after winning the Public Links Championship in 2014.

Behind Waters on the leaderboard is Doug Carter of Martinez at 1-under-par 70. Justin Mattheis of Suwanee is one back of Carter at even-par 71. Billy Mitchell of Roswell, a two-time Public Links champion, is at 3-over-par 74.

Henry Darby of Atlanta leads flight one at 2-over-par 73. In flight two, two players are tied at 9-over-par 80, including Doug Cantrell of Powder Springs and David Williams of Atlanta. Vance Carlton of Kennesaw leads the third flight at 12-over-par 83.

The final round will begin Sunday at 8:00 a.m. EST at Cobblestone Golf Course.

ABOUT THE Georgia Public Links

Entries: Open to male amateur golfers who are members of a GSGA Member Club that is open to public play. Entrants must not have held privileges since January 1 of the current year at any club that does not permit public play.

Field: 72 players with the lowest USGA Handicap Indexes and 72 drawn by lottery; three exemptions are given to the host club

Format: 36 holes of flighted stroke play.
