SANTEE, SC (September 3, 2016) -- One day after Tropical Storm Hermine made its way through South Carolina, clear skies and eighty degree temperatures greeted the field of 48 teams at the 43rd annual South Carolina Senior Better-Ball Championship being held at Santee Cooper Country Club. Despite several inches of rain in addition to lots of fallen limbs, debris, and trees; the golf course held its own and was in great condition for Saturday’s first round.
A number of teams took advantage of the playing conditions; in particular the tandem of Todd Hendley (Greer) and Mike Mahoney (Greeleyville), which shot a best-ball score of 8-under par 64 to grab the first round lead.
Just one shot behind the leaders are defending champions, Eddie Hargett (Blythewood) and Walter Todd (Laurens), who shot 7-under 65.
Two teams stand just two shots behind the leaders at 6-under are Jim Burgess (Murrells Inlet)/Steve Horton (Moncks Corner), and Byron Beck (Marion)/Billy Hoylen (Florence). In total, six teams are within four shots of the leaders heading into what could be a low-scoring shootout in Sunday’s final round.
