SCOTTSDALE, AZ (August 23, 2016) -- Sam Triplett finished 8-under and won medalist honors at the Arizona Match Play. Triplett put together rounds of 65-67 to finish 8-under at Country Club at DC Ranch and two-strokes in front of Trevor Werbylo.
One day after playing bogey-free golf, Triplett put together a five birdie, three bogey round. The Northwestern junior started on the 10th hole and got off to a hot start with birdies on his first two holes before giving one back on the 11th.
Despite the dropped stroke Triplett rebounded immediately with a birdie on the 13th and another on No. 17. Following a par on the 18th Triplett, who is the son of former PGA Tour golfer Kirk Triplett, turned in 3-under 33.
On his second nine Triplett carded one more birdie and one more bogey.
Trevor Werbylo, a high school senior in Tucson, fired rounds of 65-69 to finish 6-under and in second place. Werbylo began the day tied for the lead with Triplett.
Defending champion Ken Tanigawa finished tied for 19th but was automatically assured the two-seed once match play began.
Play at 92nd Arizona Amateur will turn to match play on Wednesday.
