LATROBE, PA (July 28, 2016) -- Latrobe Pennsylvania: population of 8,338.

8,337 are not named Arnold Palmer, nickname: The King.

Thankfully those who love the game and the history of the game can visit Latrobe CC and experience a delightfully charming club Mr. Palmer calls home. The Society of Seniors made the trip for the 2016 Hesler Tournament.

Part of the charm of LCC is the fact that Arnold Palmer, the world’s most famous golf ambassador, is on site most every day for a tour of the course and to have lunch with his long time assistant, Doc Giffin.

The Hesler contestants were treated to the full force of the King and his beloved Latrobe CC. Inside the quaint clubhouse, each and every room is overflowing with memorabilia of Palmer’s life and career. Trophies, pictures, plaques, drawings and souvenirs gave the SOS members hours of entertainment.

And, Mr. Palmer was on site and interacting with our members, everyday, creating photo ops and memories never to be forgotten.

In addition to the iconic presence of The King, was a small matter of a golf tournament. Ninety-six players from every corner of America were on hand for the 8th edition of the Hesler.

Tree lined fairways and small undulating greens define the course, so lovingly cared for by Deke Palmer, and now by his famous son Arnold. The event, scheduled for 54 holes was shortened to 36 holes due to weather.

In the Senior Division, Doug Hanzel, Savannah, GA, was atop the 36-hole leaderboard when the third round was washed. Hanzel’s 71-69-140 was good for a four shot win over Steve Hudson, Birmingham, AL, who posted 70-74-144.

In the Super Senior Division, two players shared the top spot as play was stopped. Dan Smith, Naples, FL, and Fred Lukasik, Rock Island, IL, deadlocked at 148 were declared co-champions.

The venerable Don Woods, Louisville, KY, won the Grand Masters Division with rounds of 77-74. His 151 total was good for a three shot victory over Edmond, Oklahoma’s Jim Wetzel.
