LINCOLN, NEB (June 14, 2016) -- Carson Schaake finished 6-under and won medalist honors at the 49th Nebraska Match Play Championship at Firethorn Golf Club. Schaake fired an opening round 6-under 65 on Monday and followed it up with a even-par 71 on Tuesday.
Schaake, a senior at Iowa and the winner of the 2015 Big Ten Conference individual championship, finished four-strokes clear of the field and will be the three-seed when match play begins on Wednesday. The top-seed belongs to defending champion Michael Colgate while last years runner-up Lance Lawson is the two-seed.
On Monday Schaake birdied seven holes and bogeyed just one. Schaake went on two impressive runs, birdieing three of the first five holes and then three consecutive holes to start the back nine. Tuesday's second round produced a two birdie, two bogey round.
Mike Coatman, Rylee Reinertson and Jay Cottam shared second place at 2-under while Patrick Hanzel and Dylan Heng were 1-under and tied for fifth.
