Atlanta Open: Amateur Jason Mendel leads after round one
JOHNS CREEK, GA (June 13, 2016) -- Amateur Jason Mendel leads the Atlanta Open after the first round at St. Ives Country Club thanks to a bogey-free 7-under 65 on Monday. Professional Gus Wagoner is 5-under and in second place while fellow amateur Adam Morris along with two others is tied for third at 4-under.
Mendel, a junior at South Alabama, started his round with a birdie on No. 1 but only had one additional front nine birdie on the 8th. For Mendel the real fireworks came on the back nine where he birdied five holes to close in 5-under 31. His birdies came on 10, 12, 14, 15 and 18.
On Tuesday Mendel will be part of the final group and he will tee off at 2:15 p.m. EST.
