BIRMINGHAM, AL (May 12, 2016) – England's Josh
Hilleard, Farrington Golf Club, has been named
April’s
Amateur of the Month by the Southern Golf
Association
(SGA) in recognition of his astonishing run of four
victories IN A ROW during the month of April.
Hilleard started his run during the Berkhamsted
Trophy on April 2nd after 72-holes, then on to the
Faldo
Series Whales Championship by six shots the next
week, followed by the Hampshire Salver with a one
shot
win, and concluding with the West of England
Amateur
on April 24, this last victory by eight shots.
If one looked over the list of recipients of this
award over the past 13 years, including Lee McCoy,
Am
of the Month: March, you would be hard-pressed to
find
a month of competition more deserving than that of
Hilleard.
Hilleard will be presented his plaque at the
Formby
Golf Club over the weekend of May 14-15 during the
England vs France International Golf Match by none
other than Nigel Edwards, four-time GB&I Walker
Cupper and three-time GB&I Walker Cup Captain.
Other nominees for the month included: Lee
McCoy
of the University of Georgia and current
Southeastern
Conference champ; Beau Hossler of the University of
Texas, who won the 3M Augusta State Intercollegiate
and finished 2nd in the Big 12 Championship; Andy
Zhang, winner of the Azalea Invitational and second
place finisher the next week at the Terra Cotta
Invitational; Thomas Detry, University of Illinois and
Big
Ten champ; Stratton Nolen, Oklahoma State
University
and Big 12 champ; and Jon Rahm, Arizona State
University and PAC 12 champ.
Winners of the SGA’s March-through-October
award
are determined by a blue-ribbon national panel of
golf
officials, coaches and journalists. Formerly named
the
National Amateur of the Month Award, it is now
simply
known as the Amateur of the Month Award as it has
reached international status with presentations to
players all over the world.
The SGA supports amateur golf at the highest level,
including staging of the storied Southern Amateur,
which will be played for the 110th time in July at The
Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina, as well as the 44th Southern Junior
Championship in June at the University of Texas Golf
Club in Austin, Texas.
