Sam Engel is AZ Publinks Champ
LAVEEN VILLAGE, AZ (April 17, 2016)--Sam Engel (-10) made his 36-hole lead stand up winning the AZ Publinks Championship by one over Sean O'Donnell (-9).
Engel began his third round at Aguila Golf Course sharply with two birdies on the front nine and another on No. 10 to reach 12-under. But as the final nine pressure mounted Engel gave one back on 12 and then another on No. 17. With the lead now down to one Engel came through with a final hole par to put a bow on a final day 1-under 70 and secure the title.
O'Donnell applied as much pressure as he could with his final round 3-under 68. Even after seven holes O'Donnell sparked his round with a eagle two on the short 309 yard 8th hole. At that point he was still 8-under and well off the pace but as Engel slipped O'Donnell continued to press with two more birdies and a bogey to finish his round. Alas his rally fell a stroke short as he parred the final hole needing birdie.
With all that said the round of the tournament belonged to Davis Evans (-7) who finished third. Evans began the final 18-holes 1-over but swung his way to an 8-under 63. His round included an eagle, seven birdies and a bogey. Evan did most of his damage during an eight hole stretch from 5-12 when he went 8-under, birding six and registering his eagle.
Eric Ghim (-5) in fourth, Sean McWilliams (-2) and Trey Martin (2) tied for fourth.
