SEASIDE, Calif (April 9, 2016) -- William Aldred fired a four-under 68 to lead the way at the Amateurgolf.com Monterey Bay Championship.

The freshman at Cal Berkely from England got off to a slow start with bogeys on holes five and six but bounced right back with birdies on the next two holes. He kept his momentum going on the back-nine, firing off four straight birdies on holes 11-14 with some excellent wedge play. Aldred hadn't realized he made four in a row until he looked at his card after the round, clearly in the flow state.

Tied for 2nd is Aldred's teammate Ben Doyle along with Daniel Dal Poggetto who each shot 1-under 71. Both these players are recent amateurgolf.com champions, Doyle winning at the 2015 Christmas Classic and Dal Poggetto winning at the 2016 Wine Country Club. Evan Peterson and Brett Wolvert are tied for 4th after even-par 72's.

Senior/ Net

Jeff Britton is off to a hot start in the senior division after an opening round 74. Britton's highlight of the day was an eagle on the par 5 12th hole. He was 15 yards short of the green and had to navigate three tiers for his 3rd shot. Having seen chip shots run off the green in similar positions before, Britton opted to putt the ball from the tightly mowed first cut and judged the speed and the line perfectly. He'll take a three shot lead over Dave Stone into the final round tomorrow.

Lyle Covino holds a one-shot in the net division after opening with a 80.
