AWENDAW, SC (April 5, 2016)--For the second straight year No. 17 South Carolina (841) has won the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate Golf Tournament. South Carolina began the day leading by eight but pulled away during the final round to win by 15 over the College of Charleston (856) at Bulls Bay Golf Club. South Carolina has now won three of their last four events and overall they have won four times this season.
Sophomore Keenan Huskey (-11) led the Gamecocks taking home medalist honors. Huskey fired rounds of 65-71-69 to capture his second individual title of the year. His first round 7-under-par 65 was a personal best. The lefty from Greenville, SC began the day tied for the lead but was able to pull away on the final day with his 3-under-par score and win by six-strokes.
The closest competitor to Huskey was College of Charleston junior William Rainey (-5) who finished second. Rainey shot a career low 5-under-par 67 in yesterday's second round. Auburn junior Matt Gilchrest (-2) began the final round tied for the lead but struggled on Tuesday shooting a 6-over-par 78 to drop into the group tied for sixth.
Huskey birdied three holes, bogeyed two and picked up an eagle during his closing round. The eagle came on the 611 yard par-5 sixth. It was part of a two hole stretch that saw Huskey go birdie-eagle.
Huskey wasn't the only Gamecock to play lights out golf during the tournament. In fact he was just one of five South Carolina players to finish in the top-10. Freshman Scott Stevens (-2) finished T6 while senior Will Starke (-1), senior Matthew NeSmith (-1) and redshirt senior Sean Kelly (-1) were amongst a group of seven golfers to finish in 10th.
Rounding out the top-5 of the team standings are No. 6 Auburn (861) in third, No. 13 Wake Forest (864) in fourth and Charleston Southern (866) in fifth.
