AWENDAW, SC (April 4, 2016)--Defending a championship is never easy but No. 17 South Carolina (561) is 18-holes away from doing just that at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. The Gamecocks will carry an eight stroke lead over No. 13 Wake Forest (569) into tomorrow's final round at Bulls Bay Golf Club. They will also be bidding for their fourth win of the season and third in their last four outings.
South Carolina won the Camden Collegiate Invitational at the end of October to finish the fall portion of their schedule strong. However, it wasn't until March did South Carolina win again. First at the Palmetto Intercollegiate and then at the General Hackler Championship.
Through the first two rounds South Carolina has been led by Keenan Huskey (-8). The sophomore shot a career best 7-under-par 65 in the first round and followed it up with 1-under-par 71 in the second round and currently is tied atop the leadboard. Huskey will be looking for his second career win tomorrow. His first victory came at the Camden Collegiate Invitational in October.
Behind Huskey is freshman Scott Stevens (-1) and redshirt senior Sean Kelly (-1) both T13. Senior Matthew NeSmith (E) a Golfweek Preseason First Team All-American rounds out the for Gamecocks in the top 20 as he holds onto the T18 spot.
Tied with Huskey atop the medalist standings is Auburn junior Matt Gilchrest (-8). An All-SEC First Team performer a year ago Gilchrest has also posted scores of 65-71 through 36-holes.
Huskey and Gilchrest have created some separation from the rest of the field leading Charleston Southern junior Austin James (-5) and Wake Forest sophomore Will Zalatoris (-5) by three. A trio of other golfers are four behind at 4-under-par.
College of Charleston (571) will begin the final round in third place while No. 6 Auburn (572), the highest ranked team in the field, and Charleston Southern (572) are T4.
