Stanford, Washington share lead at Gifford Collegiate

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The universities of Stanford and Washington are deadlocked at 1-over par 285 through the first round at La Costa Resort at the Gifford Collegiate, hosted by UCLA.
Stanford is being led by Jeffrey Swegle at 1-under par 70, while Welshman David Boote came in with 71 and superstar junior Maverick McNealy and Brandon Wu carded opening rounds of 72.
For Washington, the 2015 Sahalee Players Championship winner Corey Pereira is tied for fourth place at 69 while Chris Babcock shot 71 and Frank Garber contributed with 72.
The host Bruins are tied for third place with Oregon, two shots back of the two leading teams. UCLA, who are also the defending champions, are two back thanks to Cole Madey's opening-round 67, which leads the individual race by a stroke over Thomas Lim of Oregon and Alvaro Ortiz of Arkansas.
Arkansas, South Florida, and San Diego State are five strokes of the lead at 290.
