Doug Hanzel repeats at "The Vinny"
Doug Hanzel
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Doug Hanzel didn't panic when he shot 77 in the opening round of "The Vinny" Tournament, which he won at the inaugural hosting in 2014. Despite trailing by four after the first round, Hanzel rebounded appropriately and eventually wound up with a successful title defense at The Landings Club.
Hanzel fired 66 on day two, propelling him to a share of the 36-hole lead with fellow Savannah resident Jack Hall. Then, a solid 72 in the final round secured back-to-back titles, and this time by two strokes.
Hall, along with Bob Kearney, tied for second place at 218. Hall posted 69 in the second round to grab a share of the lead with Hanzel, but stumbled back with a 74 on Monday. Kearney's 72 in the final round gave him a piece of the runner-up spot after opening rounds of 74-71.
Jim Holtgrieve's 69 on Monday was the lowest score of the final round and shot him up into fourth place.
In the Super Senior division, Phil Pavoni narrowly defeated second-place finisher Pete Allen. Pavoni, of Macon, Ga., posted rounds of 74-74-75 while Allen used a final-round 73 to get within one of the lead.
